It's because the old way of charging EVs is creating new challenges. Today, thousands of EVs use static schedules that create two key issues:
Most EV schedulers simply pick a time to charge, without considering when clean energy is available.
Ava SmartHome Charging connects to real-time data, so your EV charges when renewable energy is most available—making your charging cleaner and smarter.
When thousands of EVs charge at the same time—like 9 p.m.—it creates a second energy spike that strains the grid and drives up costs.
Ava SmartHome Charging helps smooth these peaks by shifting your charging slightly—without disrupting your schedule —protecting grid infrastructure and keeping energy more affordable for everyone.
This program is part of Ava’s commitment to clean, affordable energy for all. Ava SmartHome Charging helps you charge more efficiently while supporting a cleaner, more reliable grid—and earn rewards while you do it.

With Ava SmartHome Charging, you can let the app automate your charging, or just get helpful notifications to manage charging yourself. Either way, you’re improving your EV efficiency—for you and your neighbors.
Ava SmartHome Charging works with most EVs and all home chargers (L1 or L2), and there are two ways to connect. The fastest way to check your eligibility is to create a free Optiwatt account—vehicle compatibility is updated regularly as new integrations are added.
Active Managed Charging
With Active Managed Charging, you can connect with your EV or charger and Ava SmartHome charging will automatically shift your charging. It’s the most seamless experience and creates the most impact.

Passive Managed Charging
If your vehicle or charger doesn’t support automated control, you can still join and earn. After verifying your home meter and vehicle, you’ll receive helpful charging notifications. If you charge off-peak—even manually—you can qualify for rewards.
Our priority is the safety and convenience of our customers. In early testing, Hyundai/Kia vehicles experienced a drain in their 12-volt battery that caused them not to start. We are working with the manufacturer to solve this problem, but right now, we are not enrolling Hyundai/Kia EVs in the program. While we don’t have a timeline yet, we can notify you when we do. Customers can fill out this form to get an email when they can enroll.
